  • Traditional Maori kites: Manu Taratahi
    Waylon, showing the kite he made. This is a common type kite made from toetoe and raupo, hence the kite is "manu raupo" - but because the design is triangular it is traditionally known as "Manu Taratahi" (although in the modern idiom a triangle is called "taratoru"). Quite often older terms to not synch in with modern terminology. Waylon's kite is decorated with huruhuru (feathers) and with mata ("eyes" made with paua shells - again the modern term for eyes is "kanohi")
