The Wairau affair (1843) Click here for the Parihaka story Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886 Spirits Bay. Marion du Fresne anchored here in 1772 Doubtless Bay.  Jean François de Surville anchored here in 1769 Waitangi. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed here in 1840 Kaikohe, birthplace of Nga Puhi chief Hongi Hika Poverty Bay. Captain James Cook anchored here in 1769 Golden Bay. Abel Tasman anchored here in 1642 D'Urville Island, discovered by  Dumont d'Urville in 1827 Akaroa. French colonists arrived here in 1840
